Community: belonging; being seen and understood by others; like-minded connections; a sense of family and friendship; knowing your place in the world

About OWYAH: OWYAH (pronounced ‘O-Yah’) is a positive community of women over 40 who are ready to say ‘O-Yah!!’ to more fun, connection and new adventures in life.

More than just your average Meetup, OWYAH is an attitude towards life. It’s about saying a big Oh-Yah!! to yourself, the truth within your heart and the life you wish to enjoy now and, in the years to come.

In being a part of the OWYAH community, you’ll find new connections, friendships and a sense of belonging with a tribe of women, just like you, who want to embrace life with an OWYAH! spirit and attitude.

Events can vary from social mixers to walks/hikes to movie nights, coffee chats, brunches, dinners, book discussions, workshops, picnics, outdoor adventures and more.

We often hear from OWYAH members how much they enjoy the fact that the group offers such a diverse range of events. It can be easy, comfortable or safe to do the same thing over and over, which can lead to feeling stuck. You grow and expand by trying new things, meeting new people and opening yourself up to new perspectives and ideas. Those are some of the keys to staying young(ish) at heart!

About the Founder

Hi, I'm Heather, a Community Builder, Author and Business Owner. In past career lives have been a Life Coach, NLP Practitioner, HeartMath Mentor, Fundraiser, Event Planner, Personal Trainer, Chef, worked the front lines of Customer Service, spent 10 years in Toastmasters and a whole lot more. I’ve done a bunch of different things, all of which helps me oversee the OWYAH community. Currently, I operate a cleaning, coaching and organizing business, Lighten Up Your Life, with my partner, Kay.

I launched OWYAH in early 2023, the year in which I turned 60. I’m certainly feeling older and wiser yet also very much full of a youngish spirit...I have plenty of good years and adventures ahead and I fully intend to make the best of all of them! I figured that if I felt that way that there must be other women who do as well.

My intention is that this community provides a hub and an ignition point to build meaningful connections and friendships that help you to live the full, authentic and youngish at heart life you're wanting to have.

I live in Victoria with Kay and our dog, Muffin. In my space time, I enjoy cycling which pairs well with my other hobby…baked goods!

The OWYAH story

An introduction to what OWYAH is all about

What I’ve learned since launching this community:

There is a great need for a community like this, for women over 40ish.

Many women at this stage are going through major life changes – retirement, divorce or relationship breakdown, death and loss, empty nesting, moving, soul-searching, health issues and more – and are seeking meaningful connection, support and friendships.

Loneliness and isolation are huge issues as people age.

Our social circles change as we get older. In fact, loneliness is being called “the new heart disease” as it comes with its own implications to an individual’s health and wellbeing.

Many women find it hard to meet new people or make new friends as they get older.

It can feel hard to step outside your comfort zone or “put yourself out there” to meet new people. Even a site such as Meetup doesn’t offer much for women over a certain age.

Women crave meaningful connection and conversation.

At this stage of life, women are asking themselves different questions and looking for much more depth in their lives. They feel uplifted, seen and encouraged by spending time with other like-hearted women.

Many women of our “level of life experience” are feeling very youngish at heart!

OWYAH members are game for new experiences, fun, adventures, growth, learning and thriving in the years ahead. Doing the same things over and over can lead to feeling stuck in a rut. We grow and expand by pushing our comfort zone and continually meeting new people and trying new things!

That an engaging and positive community can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

In my time running the OWYAH community, I’ve seen women make new friends out of former strangers (in fact, three new friendships were forged at the very first OWYAH event). I’ve seen women join together for meaningful conversations about what matters. I’ve witnessed women gather and create a safe space for sharing their stories, getting vulnerable and being truly open with each other. Members have offered their wisdom, support and knowledge to others. Some have stepped into leadership roles and are sharing their skills and passions with the group. Members are growing and learning together, often being gently encouraged or inspired to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. And yes, there are introverts in OWYAH. Lots of them. I’ve seen them smiling, laughing and engaging at events too.

Our goal will always be to make a positive impact in the lives of our members and to continue to grow our offerings and our reach so that we can make a difference in the lives of older, wiser and youngish at heart women around the world.
